SERVPRO Helps Prevent Fire in Your Home with Dryer Vent Cleaning

7/17/2022 (Permalink)

House fires affect millions of people every year at the cost of over $500 Million. Smoke detectors have proved their value, saving lives and homes from total loss. Most house fires start in the kitchen, but a significant number still occur in a place most forget about once the item is installed, the dryer vent.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 2,900 dryer fires are reported each year. These fires lead to a staggering national average of 35 million dollars in property damage, 100 injuries, and five fatalities annually.

PSA: Vent cleaning service may reduce your clothes dryer's workload while lowering energy usage!

A dryer inside the house or apartment uses a metal exhaust pipe (galvanized iron or steel usually) to vent hot air outside the home. The zinc-coated material is designed to handle the highest dryer settings and more but not open flames from burning built-up lint. Since this is an exhaust pipe and smoke seeks the most comfortable access, a vent fire goes undetected by the smoke detectors much longer than a fire anywhere else in the house.

If your dryer is in the garage or under a carport, the chance for a significant fire is reduced. The flexible vent tube may not run under the house, but it is still at risk. The build-up of lint can still ignite, destroying your dryer and the washer next to it. As the flexible plastic pipe melts, the burning material quickly ignites drywall and other building materials.

Our technicians can eliminate this threat with an inspection. We can attach an air mover that introduces high-velocity airflow into your vent for just a few minutes. If the build-up has caked against the sides of the pipe, we'll then use a brush with a telescoping handle to scrape the sides and then blore-attach the air mover to the lint outside your home. We detach it from the dryer for a flexible conduit and clean it outside using either an air mover or garden hose to wash it out.

The cost for vent cleaning is minor compared to the possible cost(s) to restore your home fire-damaged home. Aren’t convinced? There are still some things you, as a property owner, can do to keep your home as safe as possible.

What You Can Do

Clean the lint filter.

A clogged lint filter is the leading contributing factor in residential dryer fires. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that failing to clean out the lint trap causes 34 percent of reported dryer fires every year.

Each time you unload the dryer, clean out the lint trap. Before putting the next load of clothes in, double-check that the lint trap is completely clean to lower your risk of fire. A clean lint filter allows the dryer to run more efficiently, too, thus drying your clothes faster while also preventing your machine from overheating.

Inspect the ducts regularly.

Blocked ducts frequently cause dryer fires. To ensure your dryer is running correctly, check your ducts about once a month to ensure there are no blockages. Some telltale signs that your ducts are clogged include the following indicators:

  • Your laundry is taking longer to dry
  • Exhaust air is failing to exit the vent
  • You suspect that your machine is overheating

Sometimes, a blockage occurs because the venting system itself is damaged. Other times, blockages may be occurring because of an accumulation of lint, animals building nests in the vents, or snow building up over the outside vents.

If you notice any blockages, clean them out before using your dryer again. To clean your ducts, disconnect them, remove the blockages and reconnect them. If you notice any damage to the venting system, call in a professional to repair the issue.

Replace outdated ducts.

Older ducts made of plastic or foil are prone to sagging. These accordion-style ducts can easily trap lint in hard-to-reach spaces, increasing your risk of fire. To keep your home safe, replace your older models with new ducts designed with heavy-duty metal.

DON'T overload the dryer.

Stuffing too many wet clothes or bedding into a dryer can cause an excess of lint to accumulate. Since lint build up reduces a dryer's ability to ventilate, the machine may quickly overheat and cause a fire to break out. Read your owner's manual to determine your machine's maximum hold to ensure you aren't overstuffing it.

DON'T leave the dryer running unattended.

Never go to sleep or leave the house while your dryer is running. If a fire breaks out, your ability to extinguish it or call emergency services right away can make all the difference between damage to your laundry room and complete loss of your home.

DON'T dry clothes without the lint filter.

A dryer without its lint trap is an accident waiting to happen. The filter protects the dryer's inner workings from collecting lint. Without this defensive shield, a buildup of lint in the ducts can easily lead to a dryer vent fire.

To lower your risk, always use your dryer with the lint trap in place. If your existing lint trap is worn or develops any holes, replace it immediately at your nearest home supplies store.

When it comes to disasters, one could argue that none are worse than a residential fire. Not only do the flames cause inherent danger as they destroy your family's home and or business, but there is also the after effect concerning the removal of debris, soot, the smell of smoke, compromised structure, and additional damages that have been inflicted on your property. For most homeowners, fire is an incredible event. However, they DO happen and for a variety of reasons.

Top 10 Other Causes of Fires

  1. Home heat fires: Your furnace needs regular inspection(s) and ensures combustibles are not near any portable heaters.

  2. Cooking fires: Unattended kitchens, splattering grease, and combustibles near the source of heat are very common fire starters.

  3. Smoking: Always ensure that you properly and completely extinguish the cigarette if you smoke in your home.

  4. Electrical fires: Look out for frayed cords, overloaded plug outlets, and the overuse of extension cords.

  5. Children: Keep lighters and matches away from children to stifle any curiosity they could have about what happens when various items catch fire.

  6. Candles: Candles may smell nice, but if left unattended, they could cause a significant issue.

  7. Flammable items: Do not keep adhesives, paint, or cleaning agents close to sources of heat.

  8. Faulty wiring: A significant safety hazard is inadequate wiring (MOSTLY prevalent in older apartments and homes).

  9. Grills: Never cook on the grill under an awning or a covered porch. Give yourself ample space away from your home and automobiles.

  10. Holiday décor: Be mindful of how close your Christmas tree is to your fireplace and always safely hang another décor.

Electronics After Storm Damage

7/17/2022 (Permalink)

Taking Certain Steps Quickly Can Help Save Electronics in Your Home

After any flood, the damage to your home's contents can be severe. Not only are furniture, flooring, and documents at risk, but electronics can also be ruined by water. Televisions, computers, power tools, appliances, and other devices require immediate attention to have the best chance of being saved.

Homeowners with flood damage typically have electronics that they're worried about, whether the flooding was caused by a storm or burst pipe. Not only is replacing these items an extra expense but going without certain electronics for even a short amount of time can be a huge inconvenience. Whether any specific piece of electronic equipment can be restored or saved depends on a number of factors.

Humidity

It's not just the standing water in a flood-damaged house that poses a threat to electronics, but humidity as well. This becomes a bigger issue the longer it takes to get the flood damage restoration process started. Our team will dehumidify your home to get things stable and decrease the chance that your electronic devices will incur damage.

Exposure to Water

The less water that has been in or around an electronic device, the more likely it can be saved. For instance, a microwave sitting on a wet counter can have the excess water wiped from its base, while a laptop that's been submerged in water is a much greater challenge and may not be salvageable. SERVPRO takes special measures when handling electronics in a home with flood damage, which can often save the equipment.

Preventing Further Damage

When you call SERVPRO after your home has encountered flood damage, it's important to avoid turning on your electronics. It's tempting to see if each item still works, but doing so can increase the chances of irreversible damage. Once we're on the scene, we'll quickly work to save your electronic equipment if at all possible.

If you need to restore your home after a flood, count on the experts at SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville. We'll do our utmost to help you keep your possessions and avoid the cost of replacement. For more information about our flood damage services or to get a quote, call us today!

How to Prepare Before a Storm

What to do before the storm:

  • Check that loose items such as outdoor furniture, umbrellas, and trampolines are safely secured.
  • If it is safe to do so, check that gutters, downpipes, and drains are not blocked.
  • Park your car undercover and away from falling debris.

What to do during the storm:

  • Stay indoors and away from windows.
  • If outdoors, stay away from drains, gutters, creeks and waterways, where the water can move up to 10 miles per hour.
  • Be prepared for power outages, if possible carry flashlights or any portable light.
  • Floodwater is dangerous and toxic – never drive, walk, ride, or swim in floodwater.

What to do after the storm:

  • Check your home and property for damage.
  • Keep clear of damaged buildings, power lines, and trees.
  • Be aware of road hazards such as floodwater, debris, and damaged roads or bridges.

Commercial Property Water Loss and Extraction

Water is the single most long-term destructive substance in the indoor environment. It can dissolve or weaken building materials, damage floors, and ceilings and cause microbial growth if you don’t fix water damage quickly and professionally.

The faster the water is extracted, the less damage to the building structure and contents.

The first thing to do if dealing with water damage at your place of business is to remove the water immediately.

The faster the water is extracted, the less damage to the building structure and contents. In situations, this is not enough. Standing water from carpet, flooring, and walls can cause permanent damage if not taken care of promptly.

Extracting water in commercial buildings or properties is an essential part of any large water loss. Fire sprinklers, used to stop a fire from spreading, can leave you with wet and soggy office spaces.

Water extraction is used to assist in the prevention of microbial growth from expanding and growing. Extraction of water is also needed to keep floors from buckling. The technicians will place the dehumidifiers and air movers in the critical areas of the building.

A SERVPRO manager will walk the property with the owner/manager and adjuster, explaining the process and answering any questions about removing property, items, and demo.

At SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville we are here for your water and fire needs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call us at (901) 755-3705. Helping to make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Approximate The Distance To Lightning Strike: Know How To Prepare for Storms

Know How To Prepare for Storms

Lightning causes around 43 deaths in the U.S. annually (based on statistics from 1989-2018). Thankfully, this number is only 10% of the average lightning strikes, the other 90% are left alive, but with various degrees of disability.

Nationally, lightning ranks second only to flash floods in weather-related deaths. Lightning is the most frequent important weather threat to personal safety during the thunderstorm season. Since the threat of lightning is so common, it is typical that many have a lackadaisical approach to protecting themselves. The main reason is that people stay outside too long as thunderstorms approach or form nearby.

For example, during the early part of the thunderstorm season, "dry" thunderstorms are quite common. With these types of thunderstorms, little or no precipitation reaches the ground and, as a result, people are less likely to seek shelter.  See lightning facts below for statistics on lightning events.

Did you know?

  • The air near a lightning strike is heated to 50,000 ° F, that is hotter than the surface of the sun!
  • The average flash could light a 100-watt light bulb for more than 3 months.
  • Lightning occurs with all thunderstorms.

While most lightning casualties occur at the beginning of an approaching storm, a significant number of lightning deaths occur after the thunderstorm has passed.  If thunder is heard, then the storm is close enough for a lightning strike.  DO NOT wait for the rain to start before seeking shelter, and do not leave shelter just because the rain has ended.

A Cool Lightning Hack

You can approximate the distance of lightning!

Did you know you can approximate the distance a storm is from you but counting the time between the flash of lightning and the thunder sound that coincides with the lightning flash? That means you can, at your own home, with minimal supplies, figure out how far a lightning strike is from you!

What You’ll Need:

  1. You Ears
  2. Your Eyes
  3. A watch with a second counter or a phone

From the time you see lightning, it will take the sound of thunder 5 seconds to travel 1 mile. To approximate the miles a strike is from you, count the seconds between the flash and thunder, divide by 5!

For example, if you see a flash of lightning, start a stop watch and hear a large crash of thunder 5 seconds after the flash, your lightning is only 1 mile away! Anything less than 5 seconds is definitely close, so seek cover!

It's not raining, is there still danger from being struck by lightning?

YES!  Lightning often strikes outside of the heavy rain area and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall.

Will the rubber soles of my shoes or tires on my car protect me from being struck?

NO! However, the steel frame of a hard-topped car provides a sort of Faraday Cage or Faraday shield. This increases protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside the car than outside. When skies darken, or thunderstorms are forecast, look and listen for increasing wind, flashes of lightning, sound of thunder, and static on your AM radio.  While no place is safe from lightning, some places are much safer than others.

Where you can go…

  • Get inside a house or large shelter
  • Remain clear of tall, isolated trees and telephone poles
  • If possible, move to a sturdy building or hard top automobile
  • If you are caught outside, away from shelter, you need to get to a place of safety as quickly as possible. If safe shelter is not possible, lie down on low lying ground or in a ditch.
  • If boating or swimming, get out of boats and away from the water, get to land and find shelter immediately

What you can do...

  • Watch for signs of an approaching thunderstorm
  • Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are imminent. This is your best way to avoid being caught in a dangerous situation
  • REMEMBER, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to a storm to be struck by lightning

If your home or property has been damaged by severe winds, water, or storms—call SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville for a free damage restoration estimate.

Know What Steps to Take During A House Fire

Know What Steps to Take During A House Fire

United States fire departments respond to roughly 360,000 house fires per year, resulting in injuries and destruction to property. Using steps from our previous fire damage information will help prepare and prevent you and your family from a house fire. The American Red Cross recommends teaching your family two ways to escape, along with determining a safe meeting point outside the home. Once set in place, review the routes as well as a backup plan at least once a year.

If a fire does occur, the following guidelines could be helpful to remember and review:

  • Use a fire extinguisher. If the fire is small and you know how to use a fire extinguisher, put your skills to use. DO NOT pour water on a grease fire! Since water and oil don’t mix, when water is poured on a grease fire it sinks to the bottom of the pan and evaporates instantly, increasing the intensity of the heat and raising the flame.
  • Leave home. If you don’t know how to use a fire extinguisher or have no way of getting to it safely, leave your home immediately. There is always less time than you think to get out of a burning structure. Smoke is no joke.
  • Protect your hands and lungs. If a closed-door or its doorknob feels warm, leave it closed. And, if smoke fills the home, get low to the ground, and stay low until you are safely out of the building. Inhaling the smoke can cause people to become disoriented and render a person unconscious. Placing a shirt or rag over your nose and mouth will help to filter out combustion particles while you escape.
  • Stay out. Once you escape your home, do not attempt to re-enter. Going back inside only puts yourself and others in danger.
  • Call for help. When outside, immediately call 911. The fire department has the necessary gear and training to enter your home and rescue people or pets that may be stuck inside within minutes.

Patrick Belcher was promoted from operations manager to general manager after long and faithful growth at SERVPRO Team Nicholson.

Humble Beginnings

Patrick has been on our team since 2013. When he first started at SERVPRO Team Nicholson, he was looking to make some extra money on the weekends. A friend of his worked at SERVPRO of Montgomery County and let him know they needed extra people to help demo and clean up jobs occasionally. For the next year Patrick worked part time out of the Montgomery County Office.

Path to General Manager

In 2015, Patrick started his career. He began as a full-time production technician, then became a Crew Chief, then a Production Manager.

After 5 years, Patrick transferred to Memphis. There he was promoted twice: once to Operations Manager, then to General Manager. As the general manager, Patrick oversees daily operations. He coordinates with division managers to create an annual business plan with goals and oversees the management of the Sales, Production, Construction Services, and Office Divisions.

When asked what he enjoys about this current role as GM, he replied, “I particularly like seeing all aspects of the business from mitigation to construction to future planning, all while being involved with each member of the team.”

When Patrick isn’t working, he is spending time traveling with his daughter to different cities and state parks, golfing and fishing—or anything that includes a body of water. He also enjoys volunteering with his Church at any of their opportunities to give back to the community.

Patrick Belcher has worked at the following SERVPRO Team Nicholson Locations:

How to Protect My Business from Utility Room Fire or Electrical Fire?

5/1/2022 (Permalink)

A business is affected in a uniquely difficult way when the business suffers fire damage. The damage leads to loss, but it destroys the infrastructure for recovering that loss. For example, when a restaurant’s utility room or electrical system catches fire and burns a facility, the income the owners could have made to pay for that loss is uprooted, having a chilling effect on a commercial property.

This highlights the importance of buying the right insurance.

In an effort against fire loss, most buildings have measures to protect the property from utility room fire or electrical fire loss. A fire sprinkler system is one of the strategies that play an essential role in fire suppression

A Sprinkler System’s Job

This system has sensors that detect a change in room temperature. If the temperature reaches a critical level, the alarm turns on, the valves open, and water jets are sprinkled in the rooms. The fire sprinkler system is the first line of defense against fire before the arrival of backup, like firefighters.

You’ll Need More Than a Sprinkler System

The fire sprinkler system alone may not curb utility room fire or electrical fire outbreak from spreading. If no secondary response team comes quickly to help the sprinkler system, the fire can easily consume the building. Calling 911 should be the first thing you do after exiting the building.

Did You Think About Water Damage?

After the fire, the reality of what transpired inside becomes clear. Apart from the fire damage, there is soot damage, water damage, and visible smoke damage. The fire hose pressure can destroy contents and walls, too.

This devastating scene can only be properly rectified by professionals who are familiar with commercial fire damage restoration.

Professionals Know What To Do

Hiring professionals for fire restoration gives peace of mind. Professional commercial fire damage services like SERVPRO® take a record of the items destroyed and remaining. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville repairs and cleans content that can be salvaged. They wrap and store those items and appropriately dispose of the rest. They also find out where data backups could be salvaged, such as the computer hard drives.

The soot damage, water damage, and smoke damage are some of the things that must be cleaned fastest to restore the interior. Soot damage is cleaned using a dry brush. Water is drained and vacuumed from the rooms. This drying prevents mold from growing. The smoke is pulled from upholstery and other areas that could have absorbed odor. After the main cleaning is done and our construction team has rebuilt any remaining damage, items that underwent repair are brought back.

SERVPRO of Bartlett / Cordova are Leaders in the Storm Restoration Industry for a Reason

Harsh weather conditions like flooding, wind, and storms cause devastating damage to homes and businesses. Property damage due to storm damage and flood water overwhelms many with concerns for personal safety and properties' security.

When this form of damage occurs to your home or business, the first step is to find safety, then contact a trustworthy storm damage restoration company.

An immediate restoration response reduces the extent of damage done to a property. Since roof damage is likely to be accompanied by water damage—a gaping hole is a recipe for moisture and storm water to make itself at home—a quick emergency response reduces the risk for internal and structural water damage and microbial growth.

When contacted, storm restoration experts will analyze the level of damage and make a judgment regarding how to begin. Professionals' main priority is to secure property before cleanup, repair, and restoration. Once a property's debris is removed from the exterior and roof repair is completed, experts move to drying and the internal cleanup of furniture, carpets, clothes, and other items.

The Drying Process of SERVPRO of Bartlett / Cordova

Oozing groundwater, especially in places prone to flooding, could cause damage, especially if no flood pump has been previously installed. SERVPRO of Bartlett / Cordova has a thorough drying process.

First, our team sets up industrial-strength drying equipment such as air movers and HEPA filtered dehumidifiers. Special care is taken to thoroughly dry the area around the original leak or cavity.

If water has seeped to the surrounding areas, special drying equipment is used. It can take 3-5 days for traditional drying. However, hard-to-dry materials, such as wood floors and crawlspaces, can make the process longer.

After the property is dry, the restoration of any damaged materials can start. Restoration is the most time-consuming part, but is very important and the bulk of returning the property to its preloss condition. We strive to make a property look, “Like it never even happened.”

What Is The IIRC? What Does It Mean For Me?

4/24/2022 (Permalink)

IICRC logo with dotted globe and SERVPRO logo of orange house on white background If your home or business suffered water, storm, or fire damage, call us for 24 hours emergency service or for a free estimate.

What Is An IICRC Certification? Why Does It Matter?

The IICRC is the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification, a non-profit organization for the Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Industries.

When considering who to call for water damage, do you go with the company your insurance company recommends? How about your neighbor’s recommendation? In the internet age of information-overload and bias, how can you know what’s right? Who really does the best job? Who does the most work for the money? Who handles a water loss job from start to finish? SERVPRO is proud to be your one-stop-shop for disaster relief after a fire, flood, or storm—but don’t take our word for it—let us show you.

Your local SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is proudly an IICRC accredited firm.

What is an IICRC Certification?

IICRC Certified Firms have earned the right to display the IICRC logo as a symbol of quality. In order to achieve IICRC-certified status, firms must meet a rigorous list of standards in business ethics and expertise.

All IICRC Certified Firms must:

  • Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.
  • Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.
  • Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.
  • Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
  • Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

When it comes to cleaning, restoration and inspection, the IICRC writes the books. As an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Standards Developing Organization (SDO), the IICRC has paved the way in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, upholstery and fabric cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation.

Each IICRC standard takes years to develop and the coordination of several experts in the field, including:

  1. allied trades persons
  2. manufacturers
  3. international, national and regional trade associations
  4. individual or franchise professionals
  5. cleaning, inspection and restoration industry organizations
  6. insurance industry
  7. training schools
  8. contractors and public health professionals

These standards are reviewed and updated at least every five years. Many of these fields, such as the water damage restoration field, change rapidly and those who are certified keep up with the advancement of the science and generally accepted practices of the industry.

We don’t take this stamp of approval lightly—we uphold it. If your home or business suffered water, storm, or fire damage, call us for 24 hours emergency service or for a free estimate.

What Is Cat 3 Water Loss? What About Cat 1 and Cat 2?

4/24/2022 (Permalink)

If you experienced a natural flood or sewage break at your home, you might have been told your property sustained Cat 3 (Category 3) water damage. So what is Cat 3 water damage? And what are the other 2?

Water Damage Categories

They are classified as follows:

  • Category 1 damage, also known as “white water” (clean water)
  • Category 2 damage, also known as “gray water” (clean water that sat for a while)
  • Category 3 damage, which is known as “black water” (usually from flood water)

Category 3 water is not only contaminated, but it can also cause damage to your home. Professionally trained technicians can, fortunately, help you clean and decontaminate the building and items after a Cat 3 water incident.

Cleaning Procedures

When facing water damage caused by a contaminated liquid, your safest plan usually involves contacting a local restoration company. Professionals are trained to arrive quickly, assess damage accurately, and work safely and efficiently to clean, restore and construct your property.

After the assessment, the following cleaning steps typically occur:

  1. Removal of water
  2. Humidity reduction and drying of wet surfaces
  3. Sanitation and cleaning of damaged areas
  4. Remediation of damaged property through deep cleaning and reconstruction

The professional you choose may also offer digitization services for wet financial documents or photographs that need to be preserved. Additionally, trained technicians on the scene may have suggestions for a preservation method or a long-term storage situation for items that are priceless and irreplaceable, yet not entirely salvageable.

Being Prepared

Help us help you persevere in the face of such a nightmare. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is a local professional in the cleaning, restoration, and construction industry. Our technicians follow OSHA and EPA protocols to help transform an unsafe environment back into a clean, safe home or business. For a free estimate, call us today.

What is Wet and Dry Smoke?

4/24/2022 (Permalink)

Did you know different types of smoke damages emerge based on the type of material burning? These smoke types determine the measures professional fire restoration technicians take when cleaning up after a fire. We break down the types.

Wet and Dry Smoke?

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, a professional like SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville tests the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pre-testing.

Wet Smoke:

Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke:

Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue:

  • Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extremely pungent odor.

It's important to survey all areas of a property because every part has the potential for damages. Smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure, and smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action to restore your property to its preloss condition. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

What To Do After a House Fire

4/24/2022 (Permalink)

Your Memphis home was likely not built to stop house fires before they spread to other areas of the house. In general, most of the materials used for the construction of your home are fire kindling, able to catch fire quickly and spread throughout the property. On top of that, the popular open-concept floor plan lays out the perfect environment for fires to spread from room to room more easily than other floor plans.

While flames do much damage on their own, other substantial effects of a fire are smoke and soot damages.

Soot Damages

Soot is most concentrated where it burned longest, but matted debris and film from the combustion leave a dark or black residue on surfaces, furniture, flooring, and other materials, too. Removing this residue requires multiple approaches. For wall surfaces, scrubbing with wet and dry sponges can often remove the bulk of the film. Confined spaces like ductwork require high powered vacuums.

Smoke Damages

Smoke damage often presents itself in the form of a harsh odor lingering in fabrics, carpeting, and open spaces throughout affected areas of your house. Removal of this odor typically requires thermal fogging, a process that releases an unscented chemical compound into the environment and contents of the room to break apart odor molecules and leave no discernible scent behind.

The Right Solution

Unfortunately, this causes a bigger mess than most people are equipped to handle. Fire damage proves to be challenging to remove without the right equipment. We always suggest hiring a professional fire cleanup and restoration expert. We may be biased, but SERVPRO is just that. We have the experience, tools, and techniques to help you through widespread fire, smoke, and soot damages.

When you face the effects after a house fire, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville responds quickly to get your home back to preloss conditions, as soon as possible.

Does My Carpet Need to Be Replaced? Professional Water Extraction and Cleaning

4/17/2022 (Permalink)

Professional Water Extraction and Cleaning

If a pipe breaks, a tub overflows, or dishwasher leaks water can spread quickly throughout your home. Moisture from one of these instances can soak into the carpet, damaging the porous fibers.

What does water do to a carpet?

If the water saturates the carpet, padding will disintegrate, and glues will weaken, causing the backing to peel away from the fibers. The moisture also causes microbes to develop on the surface of the subfloor. Water will ruin the whole carpet if left too long, so how long is too long? How would a person know if a carpet is salvageable or not?

The answer depends on a few factors. A professional restoration company will examine the cause of water damage and determine if the water is Category 1, 2, or 3. These categories describe the levels of toxicity of the water. Flood water and sewage water are seen as unsafe and are categorized differently than tap water overflowing from a sink or bathtub.

A professional will also lift the different layers for cleaning and drying. The carpet padding will likely be thrown out, no matter how long it’s been sitting, because it is relatively inexpensive to replace. This saves a lot of time, effort, and money cleaning a potential breeding ground for microbial growth.

In general, many carpets can be restored by technicians without needing replacement—even when water seeps deep into the fibers. If the water type and severity of damage poses a health risk, though, a professional will know to rip out the carpet and replace it.

Water Extraction

After technicians inspect the danger and its source, lift layers, and remove pieces, they will extract water from the carpet fibers using specialized equipment. This equipment pulls the water up through a vacuum and sends it to a tank. Heavy-duty weighted extraction tools will be used for highly saturated carpets. Weighted extraction tools use the operator's weight to compress the carpet, allowing more moisture to be extracted.

Drying

After water extraction, a professional will set up drying equipment. Air moversSERVPRO’s name for industrial, high-powered, blower fans—push air in a circular motion speeding up the evaporation process. Dehumidifiers are simultaneously set up to pull moisture out of the environment and lower the property’s relative humidity.

Finally, a professional will disinfect the carpet. For additional information, call our office today at (901) 755-3705!

The 3 Types of Smart Smoke Detectors

4/17/2022 (Permalink)

The 3 Types of Smart Smoke Detectors

Wait…there’s more than one type of smoke detector? Yes! That old smoke detector you grew up with is outdated. Although classic smoke detectors haven't changed much over the past few decades, they have seen a few minor upgrades.

Today's homeowner often opts for smart devices for added convenience. Perhaps it's time to consider adding your smoke alarm to the list of smart devices for your home. Take a look at three primary smart smoke detector options before choosing to upgrade:

1. Smart Battery

This is the most basic type of fire safety smart device available. Smart batteries have a short list of responsibilities, only notifying you, via push notifications, when your alarm goes off or when the batteries are about to expire. Batteries typically last for about five years, so you likely won't be receiving that type of alert all too often.

2. Smart Smoke Detector

The classic smart smoke alarm is a natural step up from the smart batteries. The primary difference between these alarms and classic detectors is that smart detectors connect to your internet. This allows you to receive notifications when the batteries are low or when the alarm goes off. This device also gives you the capability to silence incoming alarms from your mobile device.

3. Listener

If you're reluctant to replace your entire alarm, you can always opt for a listening device. These gadgets are intended to listen for alarms and alert you when one goes off. They're ideal if you have several alarms in your house and only want to install one device per floor, as opposed to replacing the smoke detectors in every room.

Replacing your smoke alarm with a smart device can help you stay vigilant. You can have the added ease of being able to deactivate alarms using your smartphone, and you won't have to put up with annoying low battery chirps. Contact fire remediation experts, like the local fire department, before you attempt to tamper with the alarms in your home.

Microbial Growth Removal in Crawl Space

4/17/2022 (Permalink)

crawl space, circle around the mold in the space, dirt ground, SERVPRO logo in bottom right corner Crawlspace mold is not an issue for SERVPRO of Germantown

Microbial Growth Removal in Crawl Space

Microbial damage is likely to develop in a crawl space when the area becomes wet. When a professional technician performs an inspection in a crawl space, we check for visible water leaks and invisible moisture particles in the air. We do this because it is unproductive to disinfect molds without addressing its primary cause—the mold is sure to come back if the source of moisture is still hanging around.

Why Might a Home’s Crawl Space Have Mold?

If your home's crawl space has grading and drainage issues, mold can develop where the water collects under the house. Our SERVPRO technicians use pumps to extract water if it pools. If moisture is evaporating into the crawl space from the surrounding walls and the ground, we isolate the area. To isolate the area, we use a space liner to encapsulate the area. This enclosure acts as a vapor barrier and works well to prevent microbial growth when paired with a permanent dehumidifier in the crawl space.

Basic science demonstrates that differences in temperature between surfaces and water particles cause condensation. The same is true for your crawl space. If the surrounding areas and the crawl space have differing temperatures, the water vapor condenses. We usually resolve condensation issues by using or installing a dehumidifier. The device assists in monitoring and controlling humidity to discourage conditions favorable to microbial growth.

What If the Microbial Growth is Deep in the Insulation?

A professional in the microbial remediation industry will be able to examine the crawl space for signs of deeper mold infestation. However, it is not always easy to see. Sometimes, portions of enclosed spaces must be cut to see if microbial growth has infested your home’s insulation. When a professional certifies there is growth, then further microbial removal services can begin. SERVPRO has the tools and knowledge to remove and dispose of damaged insulation safely.

Not everything can be restored, but, as surprising as it sounds, it is possible to restore fiberglass insulation! It's also possible to remove surface mold, called mildew, from below supporting joists and beams and other hard surfaces. We also remove surface mold from porous items such as drywall—as long as the fungus has not penetrated too deeply with anchoring hyphae.

Sewage Backup Causes and What You Can Do

4/17/2022 (Permalink)

Homeowners and business owners in Memphis, TN, can often contend with slow drains, poor water pressure, or blocked pipes. If these problems sound familiar, you've probably used household solutions to overcome them. For more serious concerns, like a backed-up sewer or significant blockage in your plumbing lines, you may need more professional help with sewage cleaning.

Common Causes of Plumbing Issues

Even small plumbing problems can frustrate you, so it is helpful to know how these start. Once you know the root of the concern, you can develop a game plan to solve it. Here are a few:

  • Buildup in pipes from sediment, human waste, hair, and food, causing a clogged pipe.
  • Faulty appliances
  • Cold weather freezing pipes, causing them to burst

Overflowing Toilets

You can face a toilet overflow at home due to a few causes. Sometimes, you may even see this happen when you turn on the water in the shower. This indicates blockage somewhere between the toilet and the sewer. Water will back up in the waste lines and exit the first place it can: the toilet. Repairing this could be as simple as using a plunger. If that is ineffective, you could try using a sewer snake tool. You might have to call a plumber if the job gets too big. If you don't resolve this overflow, you could face significant damage and should proceed to hire a professional sewer cleaning crew.

When your Sewage System Backs Up

If the main sewer line into your home or business backs up, you'll notice it pretty quickly because of the foul odor. Luckily, if the blockage is under the street and not on your property, your local water and sewer company should take care of it.

If sewage water enters your home, we recommend treating the situation as an emergency and immediately calling a sewage cleanup company, like SERVPRO. Sewage water is considered Category 3 water, which can cause severe health problems and should be avoided. Our team has the protection and knowledge to safely clean up and restore your home or business after Category 3 water damage. We respond immediately, giving you peace of mind and reducing your stress during a sewage overflow.

The prospect of sewage cleaning can be scary. Pay attention to common plumbing issues and how you can spot and repair them. If you experience a water leak emergency, call SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705. We are here to help 24/7!

Protect Your Business from Flood Damage

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

green emergency evacuation plan graphic, SERVPRO logo Have a storm plan in case of an emergency!

Protect Your Business from Water Damage

Any building has the potential for flood damage. Even properties nowhere near water can incur damage from toilets overflowing, pipes bursting, roof leaks or intense rains. To avoid having to put your business on hold for massive flood cleanup, follow these tips to protect your building from significant damage.

Inspect Building Before Bad Weather

While sticking to a seasonal inspection schedule is recommended, if the forecast indicates that a strong storm is approaching, it makes sense to inspect it again. Look for cracks and leaks in exterior walls, foundation, and roof. If you find any, contact storm damage experts for repairs that can be done before the storm hits.

Clean Drainage

Giving excess water a place to go is vital to keeping it out of the cracks and crevices of your roof and walls. Clean gutters and downspouts of debris, particularly during storm season. Directing the downpour away from the roof and foundation of your building can help prevent seeping flood damage.

Test Sump Pump

If your building has low-lying ground that holds water after rain, a sump pump is beneficial to pump out the extra water—but only if it is working properly. These pumps are designed to get rid of water as soon as sensors are triggered. Regular testing, particularly before a major storm hits, is advisable.

Have an Emergency Plan

An emergency plan can help everyone understand clearly what they are supposed to do in any case of damage. Make sure it is up to date and that all employees have access to the latest version. Assign tasks that designate what each person needs to do in the event of a flood emergency. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville creates emergency plans for businesses, call us today at (901) 755-3705 to find out how you can protect your business and make it as flood-resistant as possible.

What You Need to Know About Mold

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

While mold is invisible to the naked eye, it plays a vital role in the environment by causing the breakdown, or decomposition, of dead organic matter. However, when mold makes its way to the indoor environment, it’s destructive and can cause health effects. Moisture creates a favorable environment for mildew to thrive, resulting in extensive mold damage; typically, where there's moisture, there's mold.

Mold Thrives in Humidity

Since mold thrives in humidity, small leaks and damp surfaces are prime real estate for rapid development of mold and mildew. Mold spreads swiftly due to the lightweight nature of its spores, which allows them to be transported easily by airflow. Therefore, it has great potential to contaminate a vast area.

Can I See Mold?

Mold damage in a property can be detected by visual inspection, particularly on open surfaces. However, mold growth can begin where it is unseen—like inside ducts and crawl spaces or behind tiles, paneling, and wallpaper, making it hard to detect. Common signs of imminent mold issues include warping walls, blistering paint, crumbling plaster, deep cracks in the tiles, and gaps in grout. If the floor or the walls have stains or feel wet and soft to the touch, mold testing and removal should be done as soon as possible. Additionally, a smelly odor in a well-maintained home is another signal for hidden mold growth.

What About Dormant Mold?

After discovering the moisture source and drying out the area, the mold may seem to vanish. However, failure to remove the mold spores in their entirety only makes the fungus dormant, and it is capable of reactivating upon the occurrence of favorable conditions which include:

  • Ideal Temperature
  • Organic Material
  • Moisture

Even dormant mold can produce a smelly odor and cause health effects.

Can There be Mold in Newly-Built Homes?

Newly constructed homes are not exempt from fungus infestations and subsequent mold damage. Especially when the materials used to build a property were either inappropriately stored in humid surroundings or they were rained on. If not fully dried, such materials hold moisture internally, which can facilitate mold growth and cause a smelly odor that won't go away even after deodorization.

Okay, So How Do I Get Rid of Mold?

During the first stages before mold damage escalates, a do-it-yourself (DIY) method can be helpful to eliminate the smell while preventing further development. It's advisable only to use fungicides and deodorization sprays that are registered under EPA, which should be done after the definite elimination of the sources of moisture. However, in most cases, DIY methods will only provide a temporary solution and could even spread the mold if not careful, necessitating an expert in mold removal and mitigation.

Professional mold remediation is especially necessary when:

  • The fungus has found its way into the HVAC system or other materials that are generally out of reach
  • The fungus affects a large area
  • The homeowner lacks the appropriate tools to eradicate mold
  • Exposure symptoms are already being experienced
  • The homeowner has exhausted DIY mold removal and remediation methods

SERVPRO’s Professional, Efficient Mold Removal and Mitigation Method

Specialists in mold removal and mitigation possess experience and proper equipment for efficient and permanent fungus removal from homes and business premises. Mildew can go unnoticed and therefore establish itself all over, threatening health. Attempting to get rid of mold damage without professional assistance could prove tough. Efficient mold remediation and mitigation go a long way in reversing the destruction caused by mold. For additional information regarding mold remediation, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705.

Why Hire a Professional to Remove Microbial Growth?

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

Mold growth can cause damage to your home. Mildew, humidity, and warmth are some of the factors that give rise to mold fungus. A daily hot water shower makes the bathroom one of the spaces most susceptible to mold growth, but it’s not the only space that needs attention.

Can a Newly-Built Home Have Mold?

Mold damage needs a very short amount of time to grow—as little as 24 hours, and it isn't limited to homes of average or low value. If you bought a new home or had one built recently, you can take steps to suppress mold growth. But if you bought an older home or one with a history of damage, you might have a problem you don't know about.

The Best Way to Deal with Microbial Growth

The best way to deal with mold is to call a professional mold removal, remediation, and restoration company. These are people qualified to deal with black mold and other kinds of fungus. A 3rd party will come out and conduct an in-depth assessment of your home. They will determine how much black mold and mold fungus is in the house and the extent to which it has spread. Then, a microbial mitigation team will clean the affected area.

Mold Cleanup Protection

Mold cleanup presents certain risks. Fortunately, the cleanup process does not have to be overwhelming as long as you wear the proper safety gear, including:

  • Face mask
  • Gloves
  • Full body protective coveralls
  • Safety glasses

The day work is scheduled to start, the first thing professionals will do is put on special suits for protection. Then they will seal the affected areas off and apply negative pressure which prevents black mold spores and mold fungus from escaping into other parts of the house.

Once professionals have removed the mold, the specialists will put the mold into containers to take it off the premises. They will then use a special vacuum to remove all of the spores particles from the air.

While cleaning up mold damage is possible on your own, it may be better to seek a mold remediation specialist. These professionals provide both expertise and the necessary equipment to ensure that you, your employees, and your clients or tenants remain healthy and happy.

Still, here are some simple things you can attempt to mitigate mold damage.

Repair Leaks or Cause of Moisture

When the source of moisture is removed, the potential for new mold growth lessens.

Scrub Hard Surfaces

While anything contaminated with black mold is better discarded, other mold types can be scrubbed from hard surfaces. A durable scrub brush, a mixture of detergent and water, and several clean rags to throw away after drying the surface are the tools to complete this job.

Discard Porous Materials

It may be tempting to keep expensive, porous items, like rugs and furniture, but it is not wise. Mold seeps into these surfaces, making it difficult to clean the material thoroughly. Additionally, as it is nearly impossible to clean mold from these materials, they constantly threaten continued mold contamination.

A mold removal, remediation, and restoration company is the way to ensure the mold is eliminated, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville for additional information.

Tips to Clean Water Damaged Items

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

When you have water in your Tennessee home, family heirlooms, photographs, and important documents may be affected. However, it's possible to restore them using steps to get the restoration process started. The water mitigation experts at SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville, who will handle your water cleanup, may be able to save your valued items.

Remove Items from the Water

This sounds simple, and it can be! First, take any contaminated items out of standing water. Wearing the appropriate gear, such as goggles, gloves, rubber boots, and protective clothing, gently move items to an area where they can start to dry out. Clean the debris off as much as you can without grinding dirt into porous items. If possible, keep affected belongings indoors, as the sun and other outdoor elements can cause even more harm than help.

Reduce Humidity

While items are air drying, it's essential to reduce the home's humidity. Talk to the professionals handling the water in the home about the best way to increase airflow. They may recommend opening windows or bringing in industrial dehumidifiers to help your items dry and prevent mold growth.

3 Things to Know About Drain Cleaners Before Using

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

When a clogged drain stops water from flowing through your home's plumbing, you may reach for one of several drain cleaners you have handy. These products are adept at handling small sink or toilet clogs and can help water drain smoothly. However, before you use these liquids, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville wants you to know where they can be used and when they might do more harm than good.

Drain Cleaners May Damage Older Pipes

Using a drain cleaner to clear a clog may harm your pipes if you have an older home. These liquids can contain several caustic ingredients designed to dissolve hair and waste, and the heat they create once introduced in the line can warp older metal pipes. If this happens, your plumbing problems may multiply instead of resolve.

Drain Cleaners May Not Remove Clogs

While some drain cleaners effectively clear a clogged drain or bathroom sink, they don't always work on large toilet clogs. Suppose the chemicals are unable to deal with the mass. In this scenario, the product can remain in the pipes and sometimes cause warping or other damage, leading to a massive toilet overflow and the need for a sewage cleaning and removal company. If a drain cleaning product doesn't produce results within 24 hours, it may be wise to call a plumber.

Drain Cleaners May Be Hazardous

Clearing a drain with a liquid cleaner can be convenient, but these products could pose a threat to you, your pets, or wildlife. They sometimes contain toxic ingredients that can be harmful when inhaled and have the potential to harm the local environment if they find their way into natural water sources. As such, it's essential to handle these products carefully.

How to Reduce Pet Stress During a Storm: Evacuation Plan

4/8/2022 (Permalink)

group of animated animals under the words "emergency evac" Follow these simple measures to reduce your pet’s stress.

Plan For Your Pets

Inclement weather or fires can happen with or without notice. Creating an emergency plan can help prevent damage to your home and belongings and protect you and your loved ones - including pets! When putting a plan together, it’s important to plan for their needs as well.

Make an Evacuation Plan

Remember, if you must evacuate due to an emergency, the area is likely not suitable for your pets either. Your evacuation plan should consider where your pets will be taken, if not kept with you, and how best to transport them. Make a list ahead of time of pet friendly hotels or friends’ houses along your evacuation route and near your final destination. Know that some hotels and shelters do not accept animals.

You also might want to build an emergency travel kit for your animals. This will save time and worry when you must evacuate.

Items to include in your pet's emergency kit:

  • A completed Emergency Pet Passport containing important information like your pets’ veterinarian contact info, medical needs, license/chip info, photos, etc.
  • Leash, harness, and carrier with blanket to transport animals
  • A few portions of a suitable non-perishable food, water bowl, bottled water, and can opener
  • Cat litter and pan or bags for excrement
  • Medications
  • Toys

Don’t Have to Evacuate?

If evacuation is not necessary, there are still some things you can do to reduce your pet’s stress in an uncomfortable situation like a thunderstorm.

Pet Stress Symptoms

Pets may exhibit signs of stress and anxiety that can be alleviated by simple measures. Some of these symptoms include whimpering, hiding, pacing, or shivering. These symptoms may be caused by a variety of factors including pets’ greater sensitivity to sounds and air pressure.

As stress increases, symptoms may become more severe. Follow these simple measures to reduce your pet’s stress:

  • Remain calm as an owner
  • Create a comforting space for them in a smaller room like a closet or under a blanket
  • Close blinds and curtains
  • Keep them in their normal routine, if possible

How to Prepare a Business for Storms

3 Ways to Prepare for Storms

While disaster preparedness is not everyone's favorite activity, it can be the difference between a company surviving a storm and one that does not. When a hurricane strikes a small company, as many as 40 percent of these businesses never reopen. So a good plan is critical. Read further for our four top tips to prepare your company.

  1. Buy Insurance. Have the right policy in effect when a storm strikes. Claims payments can replace lost inventory and damaged equipment that is vital to your success. Structuring a policy that makes sense for your company may take a time investment on the front end, but will save valuable time, money and energy given a claim-qualifying event. Business interruption insurance covers some expenses if the damage is severe enough to suspend normal workplace operations.
  2. Fortify the Building's Exterior. As common sense tells us, a sturdy building will prevail against high winds—like a hurricane or tornado—longer than a weaker builder. A fortified roof system, durable siding, and storm windows will have a better chance of keeping water out and holding up in strong winds.
  3. Make a Disaster Preparedness Checklist. This document will include all the information needed in a storm: important contacts of emergency services in the area, the location of critical equipment, shutoff valves, and emergency supplies, and the phone number of a local storm remediation team for assistance in the recovery. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville offers this information in the form of an Emergency Ready Plans or ERPs. These plans are drawn up by one of our team members to make sure you have access to our emergency services and other important information at a moment's notice.

It's a good idea to consult with experts and bring in professionals to coach employees on what actions to take and not to take in times of stress. Organizations such as FEMA have helpful resources to help with your efforts.

Protect Your Home Against Wind Damage

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

a green truck graphic climbing up a scale graph with the words "we scale our resources" When storms hit anywhere in the United States, our SERVPRO team can scale our resources to handle even the largest storm or flooding disaster.

Wind Damage from Different Types of Storms

While thunderstorms are the most common source of wind and storm damage, winds from hurricanes or tornadoes are more severe and may be more costly. Still, thunderstorms are responsible for a lot of damage, such as lightning, hail, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding. Either way, billions of dollars are spent on wind damage repair and storm damage restoration each year. While understanding the nature of wind damage can’t stop them from happening, it can help you limit the amount of damage to your property and save on restoration and repair costs.

What You Need to Know

Flying Debris is a Damage Risk

Flying debris can cause more damage than strong winds themselves. Damage can result from plants or other unsecured structures and objects. If a storm is approaching your area, make sure any potential debris in your homes such as patio furniture, toys, garbage cans are either secured or brought inside. Bonus tip: For severe weather, secure your doors and windows, too.

A Well-Designed Roofing System Does Wonders

Apply roof deck, shingles, or membrane over the decking. A well-designed roofing system will anchor the trusses and decking to the walls and foundation to keep the entire roof from lifting off the structure in a strong wind. Roofing material should latch to the deck.

The construction phase of building a structure is the most influential piece in reducing damage caused by storms. Loosely connected shingles will lift from the deck, so fasten that siding down. Building codes will likely direct the minimum standards for connections. You, your architect, or your contractor may decide to exceed these minimums for a stronger storm-resistant structure.

Monitor and Maintain Your Trees.

Falling trees and tree limbs are another significant type of damage to structures in a windstorm. Maintain your trees by removing dead limbs. In addition, remove the entire tree if it is dead. Healthy trees should have strong enough roots to withstand fairly strong winds, but dead trees will not.

Mitigating Damage After a Storm

What happens after the storm?

First, close any openings as soon as possible. Roof openings and broken windows are the most common source of water damage in these situations. Keep a roll of plastic sheeting that cuts to size and nail it over the opening. Your insurance policy will likely cover the cost of an emergency close-up, if needed, so contact your agent or claims center to report the damage and seek advice on how to proceed.

If the damage is too much to handle on your own, contact a restoration professional as soon as you can to help limit and repair damage and respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions.

Do You Have an Emergency Kit for Severe Weather?

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

Severe weather is unpredictable and safety is important, no matter the season! Be prepared, following these readiness tips to guide you, no matter what type of severe weather you may encounter.

Have a Weather Radio

Weather radios are the most reliable way to receive notifications of severe weather in your area in an emergency. Although cell phones, weather apps, social media, and wireless emergency alerts (WEA’s) are what the majority of us depend on for information, they can be interrupted during severe weather. Be sure to properly program your weather radio so you only receive the alerts you want for your county.

Keep an Emergency Supply Kit

An emergency kit can be a lifesaver. Most emergency management agencies recommend supplies for up to three days. The following is a list you can use as a guideline for mitigating disaster effects:

Personal Items:

  • Water – 1 gallon per person per day
  • Non-perishable food
  • A simple, manual can opener
  • Battery or crank operated radio—preferably a weather radio
  • Battery or crank operated flashlight
  • Extra batteries and matches or lighter in a waterproof case
  • First Aid kit with whistle to signal help
  • Clothing, blankets, hygiene items & dust masks
  • Important documents. (Copy of insurance policy, bank account info, identification, etc.)
  • Cash

Repair Items:

  • Plastic sheeting, garbage bags, and duct tape for leaks
  • Wrench or other tools to shut off utilities
  • Fire extinguisher

Make a family plan

Make sure all members in the household are aware of where they are to go in the event of severe weather. If for some reason the family is separated in the event of a severe storm, have a meeting place established to aid in finding each other amidst the devastation.

Highly Trained with Resources to Handle Storms

SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville specializes in severe weather restoration. Our crews are highly trained and we use specialized equipment to restore your property to its pre-storm condition. We can also scale our resources to handle a larger storm or flooding disaster.

Professionals Who Clean Up Water Damage

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

production technician cleaning a carpet with a water sucker, SERVPRO logo in corner Have water damage? Call SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville.

It's possible to lose everything as a result of water damage, so it's essential to understand what needs to be done if your home or business has water-related damage. These steps will keep you safe and help you prepare for professional technicians to start the water cleanup process in your flooded property.

Unknown Hazards

Water damage’s source is often hard to pinpoint once the water has receded. It can occur for many reasons, but it usually results from a natural flood, a supply line break, or a pipe break. And although it may not be visible to the naked eye, hidden water can cause hidden problems. Moisture can collect just about anywhere—behind walls, within drywall, in furniture, and other porous materials.

Wildlife can also take up residence in a recently flooded area—talk about an unwanted squatter! It's not unusual for critters ranging from rodents to reptiles to be present in a flood situation. Be prepared by wearing boots and other protective clothing. It's also not a bad idea to wear rubber gloves and a vapor respirator if you have one.

Contaminated liquids can pose a threat to your safety, too. This is a concern with a supply line break and a pipe break and is why you must exercise extreme caution when entering an area that has been recently flooded.

Safety Measures

If you must enter an area that has been recently flooded, make sure that the electricity has been turned off. Electric wires and outlets may still present some safety issues, making it possible to be electrocuted, so err on the side of caution to prevent injury. A restoration company makes mitigation a priority, especially when it comes to safety, and water cleanup is usually that priority in disaster situations.

Restoration Professionals

Cleaning up flood waters should not be a DIY project. A restoration company is qualified with knowledge and resources to make sure you’re not missing hidden damage. A professional will be prepared to determine what items in a flooded home are beyond salvaging and which are cleanable. Items like mattresses, box springs, particleboard, and pillows hold more moisture than other items and generally have to be thrown away. We recommend you record and itemize any lost items for insurance purposes.

The Process

A professional restoration company comes into a flooded home or business with mitigation as a top priority. Through the use of specialized moisture detector meters, they search for hidden pockets of wetness behind deceptively dry surfaces and remove them. These pockets are then exposed and dried. Part of restoration includes dry-ice pressure blasting areas where moisture was present to prevent and/or eliminate microbial growth. Professional technicians also have tools that speed up the drying process to prevent more bacteria and mold growth.

Make Sure the Company is Certified

Make sure the restoration company that you hire is certified through a reputable organization. Anytime you have standing water in your home or standing water in your business for a prolonged amount of time, there will be damage. However, acting quickly and calling a professional company is the best approach for proper mitigation and restoration. If you have water damage and need assistance, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is Here to Help®. Call(901) 755-3705 today.

Space Heater Safety and Fire Prevention Tips

2/3/2022 (Permalink)

space heater near Memphis, TN Stay safe when using a space heater and remember, all heaters need space.

Cold temperatures inevitably make us want to cozy up under a blanket and crank up the heat, but before you bring the space heater up from the basement to get extra toasty, consider these safety and fire prevention tips. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is the leading cause of all house fires.

Space Heater Safety First!

SERVPRO of Germantown/Collierville has compiled some space heater safety and fire prevention tips to help you stay warm, but most of all, to keep you and your home or office safe from fire damage.

  • Keep 3 feet of distance between your space heater and anything that can burn, including people!
  • Never plug your space heater into a power strip; always plug it directly into the wall.
  • Turn off and unplug the heater whenever you leave the room, especially when leaving for the day or going to bed.
  • Always place your heater on a flat surface, away from foot traffic.
  • Educate your family and coworkers about the dangers of space heaters.
  • Keep the heater away from wet areas. This includes bathrooms, basements, and even wet hands and materials.

Buy the Right Heater

  • Check to see if your heater has a seal marking that it’s been tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory
  • Purchase a space heater that is suitable for the size of the room you would like to heat. Use small heaters for small spaces, and large heaters only for big, open spaces. Using a small heater in a large space will cause the heater to overwork and reduce its lifespan.
  • Know your heater’s wattage. Higher wattage = higher energy output. Low wattage = less energy.
  • Choose a heater with an automatic shut-off that engages if the heater is knocked over or overheats.
  • Know about the different types of space heaters: oil or water-filled radiator heaters, fan-forced heaters, ceramic heaters, and infrared heaters.

Using these space heater safety and fire prevention tips will help prevent fire damage in the home and workplace. If you have any questions about fire prevention or if your property experiences smoke or fire damage to your home, call your local professionals at SERVPRO of Germantown/Collierville for assistance. We’re available 24/7 at (901) 755-3705.

First 3 Steps to Take When Your Commercial Roof is Leaking

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

Heavy rains and strong winds can cause considerable storm damage to your Germantown or Collierville, Tennessee, commercial building.

However, more elements than strong winds can cause damages in vulnerable areas. Standing water and other flooding types can cause a roof leak, which may interrupt normal business operations and cause monetary loss.

Take these steps to repair and reduce the risk of long-term roofing difficulties.

1. Call for Mitigation

Taking quick action upon discovering a leak can help prevent costly water damage to your building. Call storm damage and flood mitigation experts to stop the leak using tarps and temporary sealant. This can be one of the most effective ways to stem the flow of a serious roofing leak. You may want to be prepared for flood technicians to evacuate affected areas of your building while mitigation is performed.

2. Take Note of the Damage

Once you can safely access your building’s roof, make a list of any damage you see so you can report it to your insurance provider or roofing contractor. You should note any missing shingles, visible sagging, standing water, and damaged roofing material that may need replacement. Creating this list will help gauge the cost of the repair of a roof leak. Additionally, take photos, so you have visual evidence of the damage you list.

3. Compare Repair Estimates

A damaged roof repair can cost anywhere from several hundred to thousands of dollars, depending on the extent of the destruction. Before you settle on a contractor, take the time to compare a few estimates so you do not overpay. Consider asking other business associates if they have any recommendations.

When your Germantown or Collierville, Tennessee, commercial building suffers a roof leak, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Knowing which steps to take may help you resolve the issue quickly and lower the risk of financial loss. Contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville for additional information.

13 Surprising Facts About Mold

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

Have you ever wondered what mold is and why it exists?

The mold invading your property is part of the Fungi Kingdom and is related to mushrooms, yeasts, and mold that develops on bread.

Mold is an efficient microorganism that our ecosystem uses to break down and clean up dying flora and fauna. Whether it's white or black mold, nature uses it to refresh the earth by removing dead organic matter.

Here are some other surprising facts about mold.

1. Only a small amount of moisture is needed to bring mold spores to life.

2. Colonies of fungus can develop within 48 hours after water damage occurs.

3. Mold spores are almost always present in the air around you, even indoors.

4. Air movement as slight as a cough or sneeze can send mold's microscopic spores into the air.

5. High humidity can encourage and support mold growth.

6. No matter how much mold cleanup you do, the colony will return unless the water source is removed.

7. There are over 100,000 varieties of mold.

8. Mold has an earthy and musty odor.

9. Mold eats organic materials, even inside your home.

10. Mold can look slimy, furry, powdery, or crumbly.

11. Molds from fungi have been used for thousands of years to create cheese.

12. One of the first antibiotics was discovered by using mold.

13. There are many types of black mold, and most of them are harmless.

Mold can be a pesky and persistent problem in any commercial building in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee. The layman can't tell which type of mold is invading your property. One thing you can be certain of when mold appears is that there's probably a moisture problem that must be dealt with. A mold removal and remediation team can stop the leak, remove the mold, and sanitize it to prevent future black mold growth. Stop mold from eating its way through your building by fighting back today.

The True Cost of Mold Remediation

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

Mold damage is costly, and the remediation efforts can run anywhere from $500 to $6,000.

If the problem is extensive, the cost can soar into the thousands of dollars price range. Working with local mold removal experts when you suspect or discover mildew growth in your home can save you time and money. Fast response means less damage you'll have to pay for.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Black Mold Removal

The cost of mold damage cleanup varies considerably and is dependent upon several factors. Some factors that may influence the cost of remediation include the following:

  • The size of the area affected by the mildew.
  • Whether mold materials can be cleaned or need to be disposed of.
  • Whether mold has invaded your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Whether mold developed after a flood that may have been contaminated by waste or other hazardous materials.
  • Your geographical region.

You can control the cost by hiring a professional to remediate the problem as soon as possible.

The Cost is Well Worth the End Result

Black mold may be toxic to a home's health, and if you discover it in your home, mold removal is a necessity, not an option. Mold of any kind can wreak havoc on a home's structure and irreparably damage drywall, lumber, and other materials. If allowed to go untreated, mold can even impact a home's very foundation.

Depending on the extent of the growth and damage, mold remediation can take just a few days or require months of your time and even demolition. However, the effort and cost are well worth it, as it means that the toxic growth is out of your home and no longer impacting its health.

If you suspect that you have black mold in your home, or if a mold inspection reveals its presence, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville. Your swift attention to the matter is in the best interests of your home and loved ones.

How Do I Remove Mold?

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

Removing Mold Starts with Removing Moisture

When mold gets into your home or office, you can't just remove the source of moisture. By then, it's too late. Mold without an active source of moisture can live for long periods without dying. You will have to call your local mold removal experts for mold damage remediation, fungus and mildew cleaning, and deodorization that will get rid of the smelly odor that often comes with mold damage.

To start the mold removal yourself, begin the mitigation process by cleaning your home or office regularly. Pet Safety for the 4th of July

8/10/2021 (Permalink)

If you include pets on the 4th of July celebrations, incorporate safety measures to protect them from common accidents. Loud noises scare animals. Many pet owners say that their dogs or cats try to escape during a thunderstorm and often find the perfect hiding place. If the fear has developed into a full-blown phobia, the pet can injure itself, trying to flee quickly. Common noise phobias are effects of sounds from thunderstorms, firecrackers, or gunshots. Overall, animals are more sensitive to noise than humans.

Create a Safe Haven for Your Pet

If you are plan an outing for the holiday and keeping your pet at home alone, try these few tricks to make your pet feel safe:

  • Leave a fan blowing lightly or play music to relax your pet.

  • Shut windows to avoid loud noises and make a comfortable area for your pet like a closet or the pet's crate, be sure to include their favorite stuffed toy or soft blanket.

Additionally, pets left at home may become anxiety-ridden during a firework display and find a way to escape from the house. Make sure your pets wear a durable collar with up-to-date information on identification tags. Having your pet micro-chipped is another way to increase your pet's chances of reuniting with you should they become lost.

The 4th of July can be a safe and fun celebration for all members of your family. If there's an emergency, don't wait to have your pet treated; locate a 24-hour veterinary clinic if your family veterinarian is not available. For additional pet safety for the 4th of July, read these safety tips from Nationwide.

Why is the Roof Damage and What Can I Do?

8/9/2021 (Permalink)

Fires can do strange things to commercial buildings in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee. The flames may burn away parts of your walls and roofing. However, roof damage isn't always directly caused by fire. No matter the direct cause of the damage, you need to start the fire cleanup process as soon as possible. You can call in fire restoration experts to help you through the process. These individuals will know how to clean up damage caused by fire, smoke, and water.

Taking Care of Roof Damage After a Fire

When it comes to your roof, you may want to act quickly to ensure other parts of your commercial building are not negatively affected.

  • Cover holes: You can use tarps and boards to cover the holes in your roof and keep the elements out. Hiring a company that does tarp services makes this project easy.
  • Start repairs: Roof repair is a major part of a cleanup process. Get a contractor in as soon as possible to start looking at the damage and figuring out a repair plan.
  • Call your insurance company: In some cases, the damage caused due to fire may be covered under your commercial insurance policy. Call your agent to find what your next step should be.

As you go through the fire cleanup process, almost every surface of your office will be touched.

Understanding the Damage

Firefighters may have caused some of the damage done to your roof. They often put holes in walls and roofs to increase ventilation. The fact is increasing ventilation helps slow a fire's growth and makes it easier to manage. With the holes in place, dark smoke can leave the building and give the emergency responders a better vision. The holes make it easier to save your property, and no one is left inside the smoldering building.

Quick action is essential when it comes to the fire cleanup process. This is true when making repairs to a roof. Contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705 today.

What Do You Do With Mold Damaged Possessions?

8/9/2021 (Permalink)

If your home has experienced extensive water damage, there's a good chance many of your personal belongings have been affected. While wood floors, carpeting, and drywall can be replaced, many personal items carry a sentimental value that makes them irreplaceable. Not everything can be restored; however, resist the temptation to trash mold-damaged possessions until a mold remediation specialist in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, has assessed it. You'll be surprised by what mold cleaning can restore.

What to Clean

Mold damage affects different materials in different ways. For example, porous materials, such as fabric, upholstery, carpeting, leather, plywood, canvas, and paper, suffer the most damage. Mold can partially digest some material or get lodged in tiny openings in the material, so it's challenging to get out. On the other hand, non-porous materials usually fair much better. When mold is only on the surface, it can come off with minimal effort through scrubbing. Generally, possessions made of the following materials can be cleaned without difficulty:

  • Metal
  • Plastic
  • Hardwoods
  • Glazed ceramics
  • Glass

What to Replace

While it may be possible to restore some items with mold cleaning, the cost to do so may make it more reasonable to replace it. For example, a favorite recliner has suffered severe water damage and mold growth. If a new recliner can be purchased for the same price as restoring it (or less), you may be advised to buy a new one. If the item in question isn't one-of-a-kind or of great sentimental value, you're better off replacing it.

What to Restore

Anything precious or unique is worth restoring. For example, a child's favorite toy, a handed-down leather jacket, rare books, or valuable paintings can potentially be restored by a restoration specialist. Even if you think the damage is too severe, wait until a professional has assessed the damage before giving up hope. A new, patented, hydraulic washing system by a company called Esporta can restore 90% of soft materials to a "food-grade" clean. While you may lose possessions to water and mold, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville can make sure you don't lose everything.

3 Ways FEMA Can Save the Day

8/6/2021 (Permalink)

While the nation's countless victims struggled to pick up the pieces after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, many might wondered how they might recover from storms in their areas. Although it might not sweep across a neighborhood with the force that could wipe out buildings, an average storm can bring a significant amount of flooding. Below are three ways the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) can help during such difficult times.

1. Financial Support

FEMA steps in when a natural disaster takes over. After a governor confirms a state of emergency, FEMA formulates a method to respond to the crisis effectively. The organization can also work with the states to form funding before an expected storm.

2. Organization

When a flood strikes, it can seem as if a catastrophe has suddenly affected life in general. Since FEMA works at the state level, victims may check whether their specific area can receive support. Through a straightforward system, they may then apply for disaster assistance. Even if you have insurance, connecting with all programs before moving forward might be a wise step.

3. Promptness Matters

Despite the differences in each situation, FEMA can respond to disasters that prioritize victims first. When you register, an inspector specializing in disasters generally visits within a week. From there, the agency can work with homeowners to determine the right assistance plan. To ensure speedy support, victims may also need to work with the agency to specify damages.

No matter the extent of the damage, discovering that your home has become the setting for a flood can be shocking, challenging, and stressful. However, this is the point at which FEMA can step in to help you get your space – and subsequently, your life – back on track.

Should I Be Concerned About Flooding if My Building Has Fire Sprinklers?

8/6/2021 (Permalink)

Fire sprinklers minimize damage during the event of a fire. However, many wonder if these systems are worth it. If a sprinkler were to go off accidentally, water damage could be devastating. Although sprinkler systems have the potential to cause flooding, many myths and superstitions are not true. Here are three things you should know regarding commercial fire sprinklers.

1. They Are Not Easily Activated

Many people think that sprinkler systems can easily be set off by smoke. However, it takes a minimum of 155 degrees Fahrenheit for sprinklers to activate, so don't worry about your burnt lunch, creating an indoor rainstorm. A few other things that might set off your system can include the following:

  • Mechanical damage
  • Corrosion
  • Overheating

While overheating can occur if a sprinkler is too close to a heater or skylight, high-temperature-rated sprinklers can handle these high-heat areas.

2. They Don't Cause as Much Water Damage as You Might Think

The damage that these fixtures can cause is quite small compared to other methods of fire prevention. By using only one-sixth of the water in a fire hose, these sprinklers can cause less damage. Luckily, water damage can be taken care of quickly and efficiently with the help of a professional restoration company.

3. There're Many Precautions That You Can Take

If you are still worried about accidental flooding, there are many precautions you can take. The easiest and most efficient way to take care of your sprinklers is to inspect them often. In Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, local safety regulations require a certain number of inspections every year. By testing the system, professionals can catch any problems or potential issues.

Fire systems are an efficient and safe way to protect your building from fire damage. They can't be set off easily and therefore are not a big cause of accidental flooding.

Common Signs of a Shower Leak

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

A shower or bathtub leak can be significant. Water damage can lead to structural issues in your Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, home's walls, flooring, and ceiling. Some shower leaks are hard to catch early on. If you know some common signs of trouble, you may be able to start investigating a source of water before the leak causes too much damage.

Water Damage

When water pools where it isn't supposed to, it can cause building materials to start breaking down. Common signs of water damage around a shower include the following:

  • The stained ceiling below second-floor bathroom
  • Damaged flooring in bathroom
  • Stained spots on walls adjacent to the shower
  • Cracked grout in tiled showers

Mold and mildew growth could be another sign that moisture is building up inappropriately in your bathroom. If you notice any of these signs of water damage, you may want to call in some residential restoration specialists to help you fix your space.

Obvious Drips

A continually dripping faucet or showerhead is a visible sign of a leak. However, in some cases, homeowners may not be able to hear the leak. Leaky pipes can be located in the walls around your shower. Gaskets and valves that reside in the walls can deteriorate and start allowing water out. If you can't see a shower or bathtub leak, don't assume it's not there.

Malfunctioning Shower Pan

The shower pan is your shower's last line of defense. This membrane catches water and directs it to the drain. However, a shower pan leak can start due to poor installation or new cracks. If you plug a shower drain, a damaged shower pan may still allow water to flow out. Fixing this issue can get quite expensive because you may have to redo large portions of your shower or tub.

Keeping your eyes peeled for signs of a shower or bathtub leak may be a good idea. If left unchecked, these water drips can lead to severe amounts of damage to your home. For additional information regarding water damage, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville today at (901) 755-3705.

The Process of Removing Standing Water From Your Garage

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

A commercial garage in Germantown, Tennessee. A commercial garage in Germantown, Tennessee.

Water damage is a reality that can occur in any business. To remove excess water from your commercial garage in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, water extraction specialists use specialized equipment to rid standing water and debris to prevent mold and additional water damage. This process involves the following steps.

Step 1

Pack and move items in the path of the flood. To prevent further damage to the garage items, they will most likely need to be moved from the premises before extraction can occur. Removing them allows professionals to assess the damage caused and salvage the items if possible.

Step 2

Assess the extent of flooding and choose the appropriate equipment to remove it. Once all that remains is the water in the garage, extraction experts can choose the best way to deal with it. They may decide that installing a submersible sump pump is the best way not only to remove the standing water from your garage but also to help prevent the garage floor from flooding again. Alternatively, they may decide that a truck-mounted trash pump is the best option for extracting the water and removing any accumulated debris.

Step 3

Extract the water. Whatever means they choose to remove the standing water, the technicians deal with the standing water before they can initiate the rest of the drying process. They pump the water out of the garage and dispose of it.

Step 4

Assess further needs. The last step of the extraction process is to decide where to go from there. In the best cases, a few more hours of industrial dryers should finish the process. However, if the standing water has damaged the walls, they will need to be repaired before your garage is open for business again.

Walking into your commercial garage to find standing water might be disheartening, but it is a solvable problem. Trained professionals can choose the right equipment for the job and have your garage up and running again.

Hot Fun in Summertime

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

8/24/2020

Summer is usually a time for fun. Anyone who has experienced a heatwave knows that it can zap the fun right out of you. Precautions must be taken during hot, sultry weather to protect each other and our furry friends.

If your pets stay outdoors during a heatwave, make sure they have adequate cold water and cooler areas of shade. Some businesses go as far as hanging signs reminding pet owners to avoid leaving their furry friends in hot cars. They include flyers of paw prints and warnings of how it takes only an hour for a dog's body organs to start shutting down. For additional tips for what to do, check out this blog post if you see a pet in a parked car.

Be sure to keep aware of the elderly who can die from the scorching heat that can cause swelling, fainting, and cramps. Take walks around the neighborhood after the sun goes down, bring cold water with you. Check neighboring homes of the elderly who might not have air conditioning.

How to Prepare for Summer Weather Events

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

While the weather may be wild, you are not powerless. This summer, prepare for hazards with these simple steps:

  • Do you live in a hurricane evacuation zone? If so, you need to plan where you and your family would ride out the storm if you are told to evacuate.

  • You may have only minutes to find shelter before a tornado strikes. Practice a family tornado drill at least once a year.

  • Protect yourself from extreme heat by rescheduling outdoor activities to earlier in the day.

  • There is no safe place outside when lightning is in the area. If you hear thunder, you are likely within striking distance of the storm. Just remember, When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors.

  • Stay safe from rip currents and other beach hazards by only swimming at a beach with lifeguards and heed their direction. Learn how to survive a rip current.

  • If you live near wildland areas, make sure your home is Firewise and fire-safe. Also, determine evacuation routes from your home. Visit weather.gov or the Fire Weather Outlook to determine if your area is at risk for dangerous fire weather conditions.

  • Whether on foot or in a car, if you encounter floodwaters, turn around, don’t drown!

  • Make sure to check the Air Quality Index for your area at http://airnow.gov. If the air quality is poor, avoid prolonged or extreme exertion outdoors.

  • Do you live, work, or play on the coast?

Be a Force of Nature

Your action can inspire others. Be a force of nature, and share how you’re working to stay safe from weather and water hazards this summer.

  • Write a post on Facebook. Share with your friends and family the preparedness steps you’re taking to stay safe this summer.

  • Tweet that you’re prepared with #SummerSafety. Tell us what you’re doing to be prepared for summer hazards.

  • Create a Family Communication Plan so that your loved ones know how to get in touch during an emergency. And let your friends know that they should create a plan also.

  • Look for ways to help your town prepare, such as volunteering with the American Red Cross or joining a Community Emergency Response Team.

Water Damage: How Business Insurance Can Help

5/18/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial property owners want to cut costs and improve profits. However, when it comes to insurance, you should rethink that stance. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville has found that water damage is among the most common issues businesses face. Without appropriate insurance coverage, the restoration expense is coming out of the owner's pocket or the company's profits. While it is true that business insurance does not cover every type of water issue, it does include many.

1. Leaking

When you have old pipes, it is possible to end up with several leaks. Unfortunately, because of the nature of plumbing, these leaks may go undetected for weeks or even months, leading to water-stained ceilings, crumbling drywall, and even structural damage. Most insurance policies will cover leaky pipes, especially if you have your building regularly inspected.

2. Cracks

Like leaks, cracks can cause the same types of water damage, but they may be on a grander scale. Cracks, or splits, in the pipe can cause more damage because the openings in the pipes are larger. As with leaks, if you can prove that you did not know about the damage early on, then your insurer should be willing to cover it.

3. Freezing

Colder months can wreak havoc on a business, especially those operating out of warehouse facilities and garages. The reason for the issue is that warehouses and garages have pipes exposed to severe temperature fluctuations. If pipes freeze, then the excess pressure can lead to broken pipes. Thankfully, this, too, is covered by a typical business policy. However, you must prove that you try to maintain a steady temperature at your property throughout the year.

4. Breaks

Sudden pipe breaks should be covered. In addition to the pipe repair, the water cleanup will likely be included. Your insurer may require estimates from several emergency remediation specialists in the Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, area, before funding the project. Give SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville a call at (901) 755-3705 to schedule an estimate.

While it is understandable that business owners want to cut costs, insurance is likely not the area to save money. Water damage can account for thousands in restoration costs alone, so business insurance is necessary.

How Do I Get Rid of the Mildew on My Plants?

5/17/2021 (Permalink)

Whether flowering or fruit-bearing, bushy or prickly, plants can clear the air and generally bring personality to our homes. However, when plant mildew takes hold, you may worry your plant’s days may be numbered. Fortunately, getting mildew doesn’t mean the end of your plant. With a bit of effort and some things you can likely find around your Germantown, Tennessee, and Collierville, Tennessee, home, you can rid your plants of mildew.

About Powdery Mildew

One of the most common fungi to show up on plants is called powdery mildew. It can look a bit like a fine powder you can dust off. But it comes back again and again, coating leaves and giving your plant a dull look. Powdery mildew often:

  • It looks like white or gray spots
  • Prefers warm, dry environments
  • It shows up when plant foliage is dry

While mildew growth won’t immediately kill your plant, it’s a good idea to clear it before it gets out of hand and becomes a real threat.

Cleaning Powdery Mildew

Common grocery store items are your first weapon against plant mildew. Baking soda mixed with liquid soap and water sprayed on plants can neutralize mildew and be a preventative for new mildew formation, while spraying plain mouthwash on leaves can kill mildew spores. Milk offers a surprising antiseptic effect on powdery mildew. Mix one part to three parts of water and rub on leaves to relieve your plants from fungal effects. Watering your plants is another easy solution for powdery mildew, erasing the dry environment the fungus loves.

Plant mildew is an unsightly menace that, if left alone, can eventually leach nutrients from your plants and cause them to wither. Look for tools to eradicate the mold or contact a mold specialist. To learn about fungicides and other options to keep your plants beautiful, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705.

3 Tips for Eliminating Mold in the Shower

5/17/2021 (Permalink)

Keeping your Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, home clean is probably a priority for you, even when juggling other responsibilities. However, some household chores can be more challenging than others, such as fighting shower mold. Humidity and moisture give this fungus a prime environment to grow mold, and it can be difficult to scrub away once it takes hold. If you are currently battling this issue, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville can provide you with strategies to get rid of the mold.

1. Try Baking Soda

While some commercial cleaners are designed to fight mold, many have strong odors and may not be gentle on your shower tiles. If you want to use an odor-free product and simple to use, mix some fresh baking soda with water until it forms a paste. You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to create a pleasant scent. When the pasta is ready, spread it on moldy areas, let it sit a few moments, and scrub it away. Lastly, rinse the area thoroughly to ensure all the fungus is gone.

2. Use Vinegar

Using vinegar to clean away shower mold can be useful in two ways. First, it contains a level of acidity that inhibits further growth. Second, vinegar can eliminate the unpleasant, musty odor caused by mycotoxins, which are released by mold as it eats and grows. Add some undiluted vinegar to a spray bottle, coat the shower tiles, rinse, and dry them after an hour.

3. Call in Professionals

Some types of fungi, such as black mold, can be difficult to eliminate on your own. Calling mold removal and remediation specialists may be the best approach if dealing with stubborn or reoccurring mold issues, as knowledgeable technicians know how to banish stubborn fungi for good.

Battling shower mold in your Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, bathroom can be challenging. However, knowing which household items are effective against different types of fungi may eradicate for good. Contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705 for additional help with mold removal.

3 Ways to Remove Lint from a Dryer Exhaust

5/14/2021 (Permalink)

Clothes dryers cause more than 15,000 fires every year, and up to 80 percent of these fires start due to clogged exhausts. The accumulation of lint in a dryer exhaust hose can increase the risk of a dryer fire. A homeowner can prevent a lint fire by cleaning the lint screen after every load, deep cleaning the filter every week or two, and clearing the exhaust hose several times a year. There're three practical ways that SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville has found to clean out a dryer exhaust.

1. Use a Vacuum Attachment

If a vacuum has an attachment that fits inside an exhaust hose, it can be used as dryer cleaning equipment. Make sure that you can insert and extract the attachment without difficulty. It's important to clean every side of the hose. It may be easier to use a specialized cleaning rod.

2. Use a Vent Cleaning Rod

A vent cleaning rod is narrow and has a round brush at the end. Some rods are made for manual use, while others can be connected to a power drill. Feed the rod into the vent and rotate to clean. For the best results, you should extract, clean off, and re-insert the rod several times to remove the buildup that can cause a lint fire.

3. Hire a Cleaning Service

Some services specialize in cleaning dryer exhausts and have specialized equipment designed for this purpose. Hiring professionals will prevent a homeowner from moving a dryer or risk damaging the clamps that hold the exhaust hose.

These methods can help prevent a lint fire. If a dryer fire results in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705. Regularly cleaning a lint screen and taking measures to keep an exhaust vent clear can reduce the likelihood of a fire.

Why Secure a Building After a Fire?

5/14/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO commercial fire damage icon If you have commercial property damage, call SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville.

A building with fire damage may not seem like a desirable location, but several factors can attract looters, trespassers, or vandals. Here are a few reasons that SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville has put together why a building owner or manager should secure the premises after a fire is extinguished.

To Prevent Further Damage

Every person that enters a building with fire damage is likely to make it worse. Several factors may include:

  • Admitting debris
  • Admitting water
  • Grinding soot into surfaces
  • Boarding up holes in doors and windows and using tarps to cover a damaged roof is the best way to prevent these damages.

A building owner may also want to consider installing security fencing until the fire restoration is complete.

To Limit Liability

A property owner may be liable if anyone, including a third party, sustains an injury on the property. Security measures can make it more difficult for trespassers to get into a structure with fire damage and the risk of becoming injured.

To Discourage Looting

Several items in a fire-damaged property may be desirable to looters. Even after damages and destruction, a business may retain elements, such as:

  • Inventory
  • Fixtures
  • Wiring

Looting may still pose a risk regardless of whether building materials, fixtures, or other contents are intact or in need of disposable and replacement. A board-up, combined with security fencing, can help to limit losses and damage caused by trespassing.

Securing a building demonstrates an owner's desire to mitigate damage. Most insurers will seek evidence that mitigation is taking place. Securing a location that has fire damage is one of the best ways to indicate an intention to restore the building for practical use as soon as possible. Contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705 today!

How to Recover Your Home After Flood Damage

5/13/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO storm damage icon If your property experiences storm damage, call SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville.

When floods cause havoc in your home, there're some recommended immediate practices to reclaim your property. Whether the flood damage results from groundwater, a leak, or rainwater, you need a fast, professional water cleanup. You surely don't want floodwater in your business. In any case, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is here to help.

Water Cleanup and Mitigation

Issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), home and commercial premises owners should inspect their buildings for signs of structural damage immediately after severe flooding. With qualified water damage and mitigation inspector, you need to do a water cleanup and check for cracked or loose foundations, cracked walls, fractured floors, holes on floors, or wobbly warping.

You should consult the utility companies to inspect the water in the home, electric, gas, and sewer lines. According to Dr. Maurice A. Ramirez in "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Disaster Preparedness," a combination of water in a business, floodwater, and electricity means disaster.

Your Safety

Before entering a flooded home, you should wear protective clothing, a dust mask, gloves, and hard headgear. Don't get into the flooded building unless you are sure that the structural integrity is intact. Never risk your life when floodwater fills the place all over.

Assessing the Water Damage

If flood water fills your home, the type of water cleanup and repairs required depends on the extent of the damage. First, check how deep the water is and how far it has soaked the household items and the internal structures. A resistance meter is ideal for measuring moisture levels. Sometimes, the person assessing the floods may drill exploratory holes and slot in a humidity probe gadget.

There is apparent flood damage, while other injuries may require some special water cleanup and inspection. Your unwanted water in the home involves drying and an assessment of these damages:

  • Wet plaster, wallboard, insulation, or paneling
  • Distorted warping and floorboards due to flood damage
  • Severe wood rot in the lumber structures
  • Termite damage for termites infest wet wood
  • Weak home foundation or an eroded ground surrounding the home
  • Roof damage in the form of cracked or missing shingles, faulty flashing, or holes

Further checking may include the walls and ceilings for any discoloration. Additionally, you should observe the premises for any signs of textured growth, primarily black or green, musty smells, or foul odors.

Reputable water in a business company can assist in ascertaining the flood damage to the important installations. The following equipment will need drying and cleaning:

  • The air ducts
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Sewage system
  • Electrical systems

Contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705 for water and flood damage assistance.

How to Tell When Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning

5/13/2021 (Permalink)

4 Steps to Prevent a Dryer Fire

If you own a home in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, fire safety is something you should think about. You've probably installed smoke detectors and have an extinguisher handy; however, have you recently taken a look at the vent on your dryer? Every year, thousands of homes are damaged due to the occurrence of a lint fire. Luckily, it's easy to tell when it's time to clean your dryer vent. So, what should you look for to prevent a dryer fire? SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is here with some tips to help.

1. There's a Burning Odor

A good indication that the vent needs cleaning is a burning smell. If lint is clogging up the drum casing, exhaust tube, or trap, you could easily have a lint fire. When there's a burning odor coming from the dryer, turn it off and call a professional to service it.

2. Clothes and Dryer Are Both Hot

If the dryer is extremely warm when you touch the outside and your clothes feel hot when you remove them, it's probably a blocked vent. When the vent is blocked, the hot air can't escape from the dryer.

3. Clothes Are Taking Forever to Dry

With a blocked vent, clothes might take up to three times as long, as usual, to dry. When you put your clothes in for a regular cycle, you might find that they're still damp when you take them out of the dryer. If the vent is blocked, it won't allow moisture to be released from the dryer.

4. Your Dryer Hasn't Been Inspected for a While

A vent cleaning professional should take a look at your dryer at least once a year. While you can clean the vent by yourself, hiring a professional will ensure that the job is done right, and they'll have the right equipment to do a thorough cleaning and make sure the dryer in a safe condition for use.

The last thing you want is a lint fire in your home. By looking for the visible signs, you can prevent a house fire. Contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705 with additional questions.

Why Do Ice Storms Result in Damage?

5/12/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is here to help in any storm. An ice storm involves the accumulation of freezing rain. Snow melts as it passes through air that's warmer than freezing. Precipitation then refreezes as it falls through subfreezing air closer to the ground. This results in a layer of ice that can be up to several inches thick.

What Do Ice Storms Involve?

Ice storms can result in ice accumulations on the ground, sidewalks, roads, and other outdoor surfaces. These storms are characterized by:

  • A layer of ice at least a quarter-inch thick
  • Excess weight on branches and power lines
  • Risk of additional wind damage

According to The Weather Channel, ice can increase tree branch weight by 30 times or add as much as 500 pounds of excess weight to power lines. The weight of the ice can cause branches, power lines, and poles to fall.

Common Types of Storm Damage

In addition to risks posed by slick surfaces, ice storms can also lead to power failure. Some of the consequences of an ice storm include:

  • Fallen branches
  • Lack of heating
  • Ice damming on roofs
  • Shingle bruises

These are some of the most common types of damage caused by accumulated ice. Preventative measures may limit the extent of the damage.

Limiting Ice Damage

Homeowners can take several measures well before a storm is on the forecast. The following tips may lessen storm damage:

  • Clear gutters and downspouts
  • Ensure that roof temperature is uniform
  • Have trees pruned
  • Obtain a generator and fuel

These measures can protect a home and vehicle. It's recommended to stockpile food and fill the vehicle's gas tank if you become housebound or need to evacuate.

An ice storm can make any area unsafe. If the weight of ice or other factors damages a residence in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705 for help.

A Quick Guide to Commercial Storm Insurance

5/12/2021 (Permalink)

As a business owner in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, insuring your property is a no-brainer. However, not all people know precisely how storm insurance works or what it covers. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is here to help. Here are some tips to help you understand insurance coverage.

Categories of Coverage

Not all storms, or deductibles, are created equal. The best way to understand your specific coverage is to read your commercial insurance policy or speak with the agent. Generally, insurance policies reference these three categories:

  • Windstorm – This includes any damage to the property resulting from wind or hail that does not fall into one of the other categories.
  • Hurricane – The definition of a hurricane differs by state and storm insurance company. Some define it by wind speed; others consider the amount of time between the National Weather Service (NWS) announcement and the damage time.
  • Named Storm – When a tropical storm is severe and widespread, the NWS calls it. For some insurance coverage, this may fall into the hurricane category.

Differences in Deductibles

When you first buy property insurance, you consider your deductible. This is the amount of money you, the business owner, must pay out of pocket before receiving insurance funds. When the damage results from a natural disaster, people are often surprised that the same deductible does not apply. Instead of a standard amount, coverage is a percentage of the total cost for storm restoration professionals to mitigate and repair the damage. A typical rate is between one and five percent.

Whether severe winds in Germantown, Tennessee or Collierville, Tennessee, knocks a tree into your commercial building or a hurricane causes significant destruction, understanding storm insurance is critical to getting your business up and running again. When the unexpected happens, take comfort in the notion that your insurance agent and SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is here for you!

How to Keep Your Pipes from Freezing

5/11/2021 (Permalink)

As the weather gets colder, the possibility of frozen pipes in your Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, home becomes a genuine concern. If you have a pipe freeze, the water inside can expand, and the pipe can burst. Follow these steps SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville has outlined below to prevent this from happening.

1. Insulate

Any pipes in unheated places, like basements and crawlspaces, should be wrapped in insulation such as fiberglass or foam rubber sleeves. Use as much insulation as you can.

2. Maintain a Stable Temperature

Keeping the temperature the same year around also helps prevent frozen pipes. Having the thermostat set to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit will help keep the pipes from freezing, but it will also prevent contraction and expansion, which can weaken pipes and cause them to leak.

3. Keep Faucets Running

Let your faucets run at a slow drip when the weather gets below freezing. This can prevent pipes from freezing by making sure that pressure doesn't build up inside. Even if the water freezes, it won't be able to cause the pipe to burst.

4. Close Valves, Open Valves

Any valves that supply water to the outside should be closed. Any outside valves should be opened to allow any water that's inside to flow out.

5. Frozen Pipe is Found

If you turn on the faucet during a cold snap, and hardly any water comes out, a pipe will probably be frozen. Check along the exterior wall to find the pipe or see where the water line comes through the foundation to enter the house. Once the problem area is located, use a heating pad or a hairdryer to warm up the pipe, allowing the water to run while you do it.

If you had frozen pipes burst and caused water damage to your home, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705 to take care of the repairs.

Mold: An Overview for Business Owners and Investors

5/10/2021 (Permalink)

What is Mold and How Do You Handle It?

When business owners hear the phrase mold growth, they most likely get sick feelings in the pit of their stomachs because they anticipate the costly repairs and remediation necessary for toxic black mold. However, the cost is primarily dependent on mold coverage, type, and overall damage. Although, before you get your calculator out, it is good to understand what mold is and how to handle it. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville has put together information regarding mold.

1. Causes of Mold

Mold is essentially a moisture problem. The spores thrive on water and will assemble and establish colonies when near a water source. This is also why mold is found near plumbing, in basements, attics, bathrooms, and wall cavities because it thrives in damp, dark, and humid areas.

2. Dangers of Toxic Mold

Black mold is used as a blanket term referring to toxic mold. However, the only way to tell what type of mold is present in your building is to have it tested. No matter the kind of mold, you should safely remove it following city and state regulations as quickly as possible, ensuring everyone's safety.

3. Mold Growth

Mold spreads quickly, usually taking less than 48 to 72 hours to develop. Because of the accelerated rate of growth and the variety of species, mold should be dealt with quickly and precisely. To slow mold growth or development, you may want to install dehumidifiers and other means of ventilation in your building or property.

4. Mold Remediation

Mold is a naturally occurring substance, and as such, you should be cautious of companies promising the removal of all mold. Qualified mold remediation specialists in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, understand that mold cleanup and remediation are not about eliminating every occurrence of mold, as that's impossible, but instead returning mold levels to natural levels.

The phrase black mold has become scarier than reality because of manipulative advertising strategies. However, despite the hype, mold is still a problem that demands immediate attention, and as mold types vary greatly, it is best to seek professional assistance in the removal process. Contact your mold remediation specialists, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville, at (901) 755-3705.

That Isn’t a Mud Bath: What to Do When There’s a Sewage Backup in Your Bathtub

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

Three Steps to Ensure You and Your Family Remain Safe

Have you ever dreamed of a beautiful spa day, soaking in a mud bath, and just letting all worries fade away? Well, that foul-smelling brown, black, and gray sludge bubbling in your bathtub isn’t that. A sewage backup is an unfortunate occurrence, and while cleanup may seem like a manageable undertaking for contained areas, like bathtubs, there are hidden risks to both your health and your home. If you have experienced a sewage backup, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville has put together these steps to ensure that you and your family remain safe.

1. Call the Experts

While a bathtub backup is contained and minimal when considering basement backups, you still want to call emergency restoration services in the Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, area. Sewage water is regarded as blackwater and may have contaminants that can cause symptoms detrimental to your health:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Liver failure

Restoration specialists are certified and equipped to handle contaminated materials. They have the training so that you and your family remain healthy and happy.

2. Turn Off the Water

When you experience a sewage backup, the first thing you should do is turn off the water to the affected area or the entire house. Water that continues to drain into the lines from sinks or toilets will only cause the sewage level to rise in your system, spreading damage across a larger area.

3. Ensure Your Safety

When you experience this type of flooding, it is essential to keep yourself and your family safe. Blackwater is contaminated water that can affect humans and animals in negative ways. If the backup is located in an area that can be sealed off to children and pets, it is best to do so. If the affected area is too large to contain, it may be best to leave your home until help arrives.

A sewer backup is nothing to take lightly. The black water alone is a threat enough to stay clear of and seek professional assistance. Give SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville a call at (901) 755-3705 for assistance in dealing with sewage problems.

Using Drain Cleaners: 3 Important Facts

5/5/2021 (Permalink)

When a clogged drain stops up in your Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, home's plumbing, you may reach for one of several drain cleaners you have handy. These products are adept at handling small sink or toilet clogs and can help water drain smoothly. However, before you use these liquids, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville wants you to know where they can be used and when they might do more harm than good.

The Chemicals May Damage Older Pipes

Using a drain cleaner to clear a clog may harm your pipes if you have an older home. These liquids can contain several caustic ingredients designed to dissolve hair and waste, and the heat they create once introduced in the line can warp older metal pipes. If this happens, your plumbing problems may multiply instead of being resolved.

The Compounds May Not Remove Clogs

While some drain cleaners effectively clear a clogged drain or bathroom sink, they don't always work on large toilet clogs. Suppose the chemicals are unable to deal with the mass. In this scenario, the product can remain in the pipes and sometimes cause warping or other damage, leading to a massive toilet overflow and the need for a sewage cleaning and removal company. If a drain cleaning product doesn't produce results within 24 hours, it is wise to call a plumber.

The Cleaners May Be Hazardous

Clearing a drain with a liquid cleaner can be convenient, but these products could pose a threat to you, your pets, and wildlife. They sometimes contain toxic ingredients that can be harmful when inhaled and harm the local environment if they find their way into natural water sources. As such, it's essential to handle these products carefully.

Dealing with a clogged drain in your Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, home can be frustrating. Before reaching for a liquid drain cleaner, it's essential to know the cleaner's facts and its use. Keep your home and family safe today.

Characteristics of Blackwater

Heavy rain causing blackwater in Tennessee Do you know the characteristics of blackwater?

When your commercial building in Germantown, Tennessee, or Collierville, Tennessee, floods, you may not realize that the damage can vary based on the water source. Flooding usually falls into one of three categories—clean, gray, or black. For example, if a pipe burst, SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville may not have to worry about the decontamination process as if they would if the flood water came from rain. To better understand these differences, you need to consider the characteristics of the third category of water damage.

Source

The source of the water may dictate whether it is considered black, gray, or clean. Anything in the black category usually comes from one of the following sources:

• Sewage backup

• River overflow

• Heavy rain

Because the source plays such an essential role in a flood's categorization, storm damage often falls into the black water category. In some unique circumstances, stormwater may still fit into the second, slightly cleaner grouping.

Contaminants

What is in the water is also essential for its categorization. Blackwater is categorized as when the liquid is combined with feces, harsh chemicals, viruses, spores, or microbes. The more contaminated the water is, the more likely it will fall into the black category rather than the gray.

Time

Of course, even flood water, once considered clean, can morph into this dirty category. When floods are allowed to sit in a commercial building for long periods, the liquid may pick up pollen, bacteria, and chemicals from the environment. Too much time between the flooding and the cleanup essentially degrades the water into the black category.

The floodwater that fills your commercial building may be considered black if it has the three characteristics mentioned above. As you start the cleanup process, it may be helpful to learn more about the three classes of standing water that can affect your property. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville can help educate you regarding these three water classes to begin the cleanup process at your business. The Steps of Professional Mold Remediation

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

Mold growth can do severe damage to your home. If you spot mold anywhere in your home, you should take decisive measures to get rid of it. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville is here to help.

Mildew, humidity, and warmth are some of the factors that give rise to mold fungus. The daily use of hot water in the bathroom makes it one of the spaces most susceptible to mold growth. Taking action against mold growth in showers, tubs, and sinks is familiar enough.

Mold damage isn't limited to homes of average or low value. If you have bought a new home or had one built from scratch, you can take steps to suppress mold growth. But if you have bought an older home or one with a history of damage, you might have a problem you don't know about.

The best way to deal with mold is to call a professional mold removal, remediation, and restoration company. These are the only people qualified to deal with black mold and other kinds of fungus. A representative of the company will come out and conduct an in-depth assessment of your home. They will determine how much black mold and mold fungus is in the house and the extent to which it has spread.

The day work is scheduled to start, the first thing they will do is put on special suits for protection. They will then seal the affected areas off and apply negative pressure to them. This step prevents black mold spores and mold fungus from escaping into other parts of the house.

Once they have removed the mold, the specialists will put the mold into special containers to take it off the premises. They will then use a special vacuum to remove all of the spores particles from the air.

A mold removal, remediation, and restoration company is the only way to ensure the mold is eliminated, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville for additional information.

Mold: Professional Removal and Remediation

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

There's a wide variety of fungus in the environment. While mold is invisible to the naked eye, it plays a vital role in nature by causing the decomposition of dead organic matter. However, when mold makes its way to the indoor environment, it can be extremely destructive and cause health effects. Moisture creates a favorable environment for mildew to thrive, resulting in extensive mold damage; typically, where there's moisture, there's mold. SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville possesses extensive knowledge and experience in identifying and remediating mold.

What Causes a Mold Infestation?

Since mold thrives in humid areas, small leaks and damp surfaces can result in the rapid development of mold and mildew. Mold spreads swiftly due to the lightweight of its spores, which allows them to be transported easily by airflow. Therefore, it has great potential to contaminate a vast area and damage furniture and clothes.

Where is Mold Damage Found?

Mold damage in a property can be detected by visual inspection, particularly on open surfaces. However, mold growth often begins inside ducts or behind tiles, paneling, wallpaper, and crawl space, making its detection almost impossible. Common signs of imminent mold issues include warping walls, blistering paint, crumbling plaster, deep cracks in the tiles, and gaps in the grouts. Moreover, if the floor or the walls have inexplicable stains or feel wet and soft to the touch, mold testing and removal should be done as soon as possible. Additionally, a smelly odor in a well-maintained home is also a signal for hidden mold growth.

What is Dormant Mold?

After discovering the moisture source and drying out the area, the mold may seem to vanish. However, failure to remove the mold spores in their entirety only makes the fungus dormant, and it is capable of reactivating upon the occurrence of favorable conditions. Even dormant mold can produce a smelly odor and cause health effects.

Can There be Mold in Newly-Built Homes?

Newly constructed homes are not exempted from fungus infestations and subsequent mold damage. Especially when the materials used to build a property were either inappropriately stored in humid surroundings or if they got rained on. Such materials reserve moisture internally, which can facilitate mold growth and cause a smelly odor that won't go away even after deodorization.

What is the Most Efficient Mold Removal and Mitigation Method?

During the first stages before the escalation of mold damage, do-it-yourself (DIY) methods can be employed to eliminate the smell while preventing further development. It's advisable only to use fungicides and deodorization sprays that are registered under EPA, which should be done after the definite elimination of the sources of moisture. However, in most cases, DIY methods will only provide a temporary solution, necessitating an expert in mold removal and mitigation. Professional mold remediation is especially necessary when:

• Mildew has found its way into the HVAC system or inside materials that are hard to reach.

• The fungus has affected a large area.

• The homeowner lacks the appropriate tools to eradicate mold in the home effectively.

• Exposure symptoms are already being experienced following commercial mold damage.

• The homeowner has already exhausted ideas after unsuccessfully employing DIY mold removal and remediation methods, including deodorization, to eliminate the smelly odor of mildew.

Why Should One Go for Professional Mold Remediation Services?

Specialists in mold removal and mitigation will often possess vast experience and the proper equipment for efficient and permanent fungus removal from homes and business premises. Such skills are required in identifying the mold in the home, especially the hidden and dormant spores. Some companies will even replace the affected furniture and apply special products for restraining further mold development.

Mildew can go unnoticed for long and establish itself all over the business premises or homes, threatening the health of such property. Attempting to get rid of mold damage without professional assistance could prove tough since it's hard to reach such hidden places as behind tiles, inside walls, or even under suspended ceilings.

Efficient mold remediation and mitigation go a long way in reversing the destruction caused by mold in the home and commercial mold damage. Besides, dealing with the smelly odor resulting from mold damage in the property could be a daunting task as deodorization alone will not solve it. For additional information regarding mold remediation, contact SERVPRO of Germantown / Collierville at (901) 755-3705.
